Peter, an older man, is tired off all the noise from his house. So he goes out to find the village wise man and seek advice about what to do. At the beginning, it was simple but more and more obstacles came up in the forms of animals. Until… it looked as though a whole farm came to life right in front of him!
The illustrations by Simms Taback are sketched. They include contrasting colors and shadows within the illustrations. Most of the colors used are shades of orange, blue, and white. The illustrations show the emotions of the characters through their faces to give the reader a deeper understanding.
Content Area and Grade: English – 2nd Grade
The students would break the poem down by: circling the rhyming words, underlining sound words, and any other types of similes, metaphors, or onomatopoeias.
For an ELL student, I would make sure they understood each part I wanted them to show when breaking down the poem. For example, explaining what rhyming, sound words, similes, metaphors, and onomatopoeias are so that the student can complete the task. I would give them examples in their native language compared to English, so they are able to recognize it in English text.
