Book Title: The Day the Crayons Came Home
Author: Drew Daywalt
Illustrator: Oliver Jeffers
Publisher: Philomel Books
Copyright: 2015
# of Pages: 35 Pages
Genre: Picture Fiction
Plot Summary:
Duncan, a little boy, had a box of crayons. One day while Duncan was coloring he receives a stack of postcards in the mail. Each postcard is written by a crayon he left throughout the house. The colors are telling him of what they have gone through since he left them and now they are wanting to come back to him. The crayons continue to send Duncan postcards of their journey back to him. Duncan was sad when he realized how the crayons felt left out, forgotten, or broken. Duncan decides to create a place that would make all the crayons welcome and at home.
Description of the illustrations:The illustrations in this book are very funny and childlike. They look like they are drawn by Duncan himself. The crayon writes the postcard himself and shows how he feels making it colorful and captivating. One of the pages even has a glow in the dark drawing! Some of the crayons are riding animals while others are stuck in the couch. I really enjoy these illustrations and find them entertaining with the story.

ALSDE:
Writing Standards for a first grade class. ELA 2.24.1 Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide some sense of closure. I would use this book in an English writing class.

I have never heard of this book before, but it seems like such a fun book! I think that the idea to use this book for sequencing in first grade would be a great idea. You might could also allow students to write on their own postcard to retell how a crayon (of their choice) felt in the story!
ReplyDeleteI would love to have this book in my classroom library one day! You could do so many different fun activities to go along with this book.
